In the Garden of Beasts, Erik Larsen
In the Garden of Beasts is a fascinating true story of an American ambassador, William Dodd and his untamed daughter Martha, in the prewar years of Berlin Germany. Originally proud supporters of the newly established German leadership the Dodds’ political views shift drastically as they rub shoulders with some of the most evil men in history.
Larsen demonstrates how Hitler gained so much power over so many people in such a short amount of time through the wild escapades of Martha Dodd and her newly acquired German (and Soviet Spy) friends. The early years of Jewish persecution and the failure of American diplomats to help are astonishingly unfortunate.
The end result of WWII is well known to all, but this is the story of how it all began.
