Rice Heating Bags

Incredibly easy to make, comforting during the cold weather months, inexpensive, makes a great Christmas gift or Get Well Soon gift!

A few years ago a good friend of mine gave me a rice bag as a Christmas gift. My kids fought over it endlessly. Finally I broke down and made each one of them their own. I keep my house very cold, especially in the spring and fall, so the kids warm their rice bags up every night before going to bed.

The great thing about making your own rice bags is that you can make them any size or shape you want. They can be heated in the microwave or cooled in the freezer. If there isn’t access to a microwave you can even heat them on the stove; carefully.  Following is a list of ways to use your rice bags.

  • Large bags, like my kids have, are great for putting in a cold bed with you or placing on sore and aching muscles.
  • Small felt rice bags are great for putting in your pocket while out in the cold (think how different the Christmas parade will be this year with warm hands!!).

  •  In the past I have taught classes with very small children who have a difficult time sitting still and keeping their hands under control, giving them a rice bag to ‘keep warm’ helped tremendously!
  • Taking dinner to a neighbor or a party? Use a rice bag to keep the food HOT or COLD! You can even make a bag that will wrap around a jug of milk!

1- To make a rice bag out of fabric (100% cotton or felt work the best, avoid using flannel) simply cut 2 pieces to the desired size (15×18 works well).

2- Sew 2 pieces using a zigzag stitch around the outside with RIGHT sides together; be sure to leave a 2 inch opening for turning and filling.

3- Turn bag right side out.

4- Fill with Long Grain White rice.
5- Sew the opening shut.

To heat, place bag in the microwave for 2 minutes. To cool, place bag in freezer over night.

If using felt, simply place the two pieces together and sew around the edges, no turning necessary.
